UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

I am concerned after reading reports of Canada's intention not to support the Draft UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples currently being negotiated at the United Nations. As you know this document has been under negotiation for more than 20 years and until recently was supported by Canada. As you know, recently the Canadian Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs passed a motion calling on Canada to support the Draft Declaration.

The legacy of human rights abuses faced by the 370 million indigenous
peoples globally is appalling: extreme poverty, ill health, low life
expectancy and the threat of cultural destruction. There is an urgent need for an international human rights declaration that clearly affirms their rights.

I therefore implore you to reconsider
Canada's position and continue the leadership that Canada had formerly shown and support the Draft
Declaration as it now stands.
